Metro Area Work Group News We currently have two work groups in the metro area that each meet once a month. At these meetings, the groups make various items for the newborn layettes we deliver to nine local agencies and hospitals. We are now averaging between 40 and 45 layette donations each month, and expect that number to soon be about 50. We also deliver individual items to special care nurseries for premature babies and burial ensembles for babies who have died (whether premature or full-term). These tiny outfits give the nurses an opportunity to comfort the grieving families and allow them to bury their child in dignity. For the tiniest of infants, we provide pouches, and for babies weighing more than 2 lbs we offer a gown or outfit, bonnet or hat, blanket and booties. Our volunteers are dedicated to making these items by hand and thereby showing our love and compassion to newborns and their families who might otherwise go without adequate clothing and bedding. When attending a work group meeting, please bring your sewing machine and/or serger if you can. This is a great chance to gather with others, learn new techniques and help babies in need! What do we need? We’re often asked what we need the most, and the answer is simple – everything! However, we always have a shortage of afghans and diaper bags, and since we give some items in pairs, such as receiving blankets, sleepers, gowns, t-shirts and bibs, they tend to disappear rather quickly. You are welcome to simply pick a need and fill it. With all of us working together, we ARE making a difference! Items of the Month We need these items for our infant bundles and welcome donations from anyone wanting to help: August/September October November
Here’s a list of the items included in each layette:
The following baby care items are also included when available:
West Side Clinic Sewing Classes
Some of the women speak only Spanish, but that doesn’t stop us from having fun and helping them learn to make receiving blankets, burp cloths, bibs and quilts. They have the option of using a sewing machine or serger and a surprising number prefer sergers! Two volunteers also regularly make quilts for each graduate of the prenatal clinic. Right now there are about 30 graduates every nine weeks, and thanks to these two dedicated women, we had enough quilts this past winter. Thank you to everyone who has helped me teach the class during the past
year: Sharon Nancarrow, Carol Houseman, Andrea Baker, Linda Sjoquist and
Liz Woolley (a thousand apologies if I have forgotten anyone!). Also,
thank you to all the people who donated sewing machines and the serger
for the class. |
