South Metro Work Group

The South Metro work group meets the 3rd Saturday of every month from 10 AM to 2 PM. We are currently meeting at Shepherd of the Valley Church in Apple Valley (near the MN Zoo). Please join us to sew, serge, cut, assemble quilts, or help pack finished items into bundles for delivery. Sewing skills are not required. Our most urgent needs right now are baby care items, and newborn sleepers and gowns. For more information contact Ruth Volk at

Ruth.Volk@bundlesoflove.org.

Upcoming meeting dates: February 15th, March 15th, April 19th, 2003.

Sorority Pledging Help

Several months ago I was delighted to hear from Anika Walz of Lambda Sigma Tau, who was seeking a service opportunity for her group of sorority pledges. They learned about Bundles of Love through volunteermatch.com, and 22 young women attended our March South Metro meeting. They cut yards and yards of flannel for us into blankets, bibs and burp cloths, put drawstrings in gowns, and helped assemble bundles. You can imagine how much this energetic group accomplished, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to Anika and her sorority pledges.

Exchange Club Meeting

Recently I spoke at a meeting of the Exchange Club, a national organization with a local chapter in Eagan. This group is involved in helping prevent child abuse and encouraging people to become involved in community service. Locally, they primarily support the Lewis House of Community Action Council.

I spoke to the group for about a half hour, and later was approached by an Eagan police officer and a gal from the Community Action Council, who both expressed interest in the work of Bundles of Love. The police officer told me the officer’s wives have an auxiliary group that performs service projects, and he promised to pass on information about Bundles of Love to them.

The gal from Community Action Council saw our list of needs and said they receive many of those items, but don’t have a direct need for them, and offered to pass them along to us. I noted that we receive items we can’t use but they probably could, so a productive exchange may be in the works!

Apple Valley Mom's Group Rummage Sale

Last October, the Apple Valley Mom’s group surprised us by offering us the proceeds from their rummage sale. The group offered a variety of donated items at the sale, hosted by Spirit of Life Presbyterian Church in Apple Valley. We were so pleased to receive a donation of nearly $500 as a result of all their hard work. Thanks, Moms and thank you to Lisa Buesing for telling the group about Bundles of Love.

Make A Difference Day work meeting

The South Metro area special Make A Difference Day meeting in October was a success, with 16 people attending, including several new volunteers. We tied quilts, and made snow suits, mittens, quilt tops, diaper bags, and crib sheets. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped! I was interviewed on Thursday regarding our involvement in Make A Difference Day, and asked to explain how and where we make a difference. There will be several awards given out for MADD, including a few $10,000 awards from Paul Newman. My understanding is that the awards will be distributed in April of 2003.
