Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Size 10.5 needles (I found it helpful to use circulars)
  • Four buttons, 3/4 to 7/8"
  • Ribbon in color of bunting

Directions:

Beginning at bottom, cast on 66 sts.
Rows 1-7: Knit in garter stitch.
Row 8: K3, purl across to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 9: Knit across.
Row 10: K3, purl across to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 11: Repeat row 9.
Row 12: Repeat row 10.
Row 13 (buttonhole row): Knit across to last 3 sts, K2tog, YO, K1.
Row 14: Repeat row 10.
Rows 15-32: Repeat rows 9 + 10.
Row 33: Repeat row 13.
Row 34: Repeat row 10.
Repeat rows 15-34 2 more times, until piece is approx. 15" long, end with a purl row right after buttonhole 4.

Yoke:

Row 1: K3, *K2tog, repeat * across, end K3.
Row 2: K4, *knit in strand between sts, K1, repeat from * across, end knit in strand between sts, K3 (66 sts).
Row 3: K3, *K3, K2tog, repeat from * across, end K3 (54 sts).
Row 4: K3, purl across, K3.
Row 5: Repeat row 1.
Row 6: Repeat row 2.
Row 7: K3, *K2, K2tog, repeat from * across, end K3 (42 sts).
Row 8: Repeat row 4.
Row 9: Repeat row 1.
Row 10: Repeat row 2.
Row 11: K3, *K1, K2tog, repeat from * across, end K3 (30 sts).
Row 12: Repeat row 4.
Row 13: K3, *K1, P1, repeat from * across, end K3.
Rows 14-16: Repeat row 13.

Hood:

Row 1: K3, *K1, increase in next st, repeat from * across, end K3 (42 sts).
Row 2: K3, purl across, end K3.
Row 3: Knit across.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until hood is 5" long, end with a purl row.
Bind off loosely.
Fold hood in half, right sides together, and whip stitch top seam.

Finishing:

Fold bottom edge in half, right sides together, and mark the center stitch. Then lay it flat and fold front edges over, right sides still together, so they slightly overlap center stitch and each other; pin in place. Whip stitch bottom seam closed, catching all three layers in middle (it's helpful to make sure the buttonhole edge is in the middle layer, so it will lay on top when turned right side out), and weave in ends. Turn right side out, and add four buttons to line up with buttonholes. Cut ribbon at least 24" long and weave through top "eyelet" formed by shoulder pattern, and use that to tie neck closed.
